Friday 10 - Sunday 12 February: Compassionate Communication

Led by Sarah Ludford

Do you to want to communicate in a way that supports peace? By focussing simply on the intention to connect, we will learn steps that will enable us to:

  • Build relationships based on compassion and understanding
  • Be assertive and transform conflicts into opportunities for building connection and trust
  • Hear others with empathy, even when they express themselves in a hostile manner
  • Transform enemy images to enable compassionate understanding of ourselves and others

Feedback from previous course attenders:

"As a Quaker, and someone who works with others in groups committed to justice, I have found the approach taken by nonviolent (or compassionate) communication immensely fruitful.  It has helped me to curb my hastiness when interacting with others, and has given me ways to understand better what is happening when I find myself at odds with those with whom I want to be in accord. It isn't easy to put what I have learned into practice, but the whole effort is worthwhile - sometimes I am startled by unexpected harmony."

"Nonviolent Communication opened up a new way of looking at the world for me. With Sarah's clear gentle wisdom and leadership I was introduced to a way of communicating compassionately. As a Quaker and a mother, I try to live this kind of compassion in my every day - but it's not always easy. Attending a course like this one gave me some of the tools I need."

Friday 22 - Sunday 24 June: What Canst Thou Say? Revisiting Quakers and Christianity.

Led by Janet Scott

Janet Scott's Swarthmore Lecture "What Canst Thou Say?  Towards a Quaker Theology" was published in 1980. The questions Quakers in Britain then faced were about Christianity and universalism.  What of today?  Friends in Britain now have more security in realising that the Quaker form of Christianity is universalist. But there are now fresh challenges from humanist and secular approaches.

This course looks at what Quakers can say today about their own form of Christianity.  Each session over the weekend  will have opportunities for discussion in groups or plenary.

Friday 5 - Sunday 7 October: Experiment with Light weekend workshop

Led by facilitators from the Experiment with Light network

Quaker faith and life are based on experience. "This I knew experimentally," said Fox. But what is this experience? In this course we will look at what that experience was at the beginning of the Quaker movement.  We will then undertake an experiment to see whether the experience is still available to us. Part of this will be a meditation in which we try to experience "the Light" as early Friends understood it. This can be searching and powerful.  Finally, in small groups, and in the larger group, we will try to make sense of what happened and reflect on the significance of the light for our lives today.
