Glenthorne was for many years the cherished holiday home of Linton Taylor - a Yorkshire carpet manufacturer and prominent Quaker. In his will he expressed his wish that Glenthorne should be a place in the Lake District where all could come and stay to enjoy the dramatically scenic surroundings and find peace and tranquility.

Over the years since 1964 Friends have used Glenthorne for conferences and holidays, with many coming back year after year.
